Day 7 - Farmland

1642 miles

Got to add more mileage so when we are awake at 4:00am listening to the trains in the rail yard next door we decide to start early. I've got to tell you when they hook those 100 car long trains together by banging them into each other the sound is like a natural phenomenon. The ground shakes and the reverberation goes on for longer than you expect. Up and on the road by 5:30. We are going to cover some ground today. Sunrise in Nebraska
A little higher and tire blows Pulled off the road at a little before 7:00 to stop for breakfast. As Teddy pulled off the highway onto the exit ramp POW!! The other trailer tire blows. Not again! This time no service at the exit. We have breakfast and proceed at 55 for 40 miles to the next major town. The tire man for the tire store is not around. He's out on a call. Another mechanic is dispatched and arrives about 45 minutes later. We talk and discover that we can get a heavy duty and larger size tire for the trailer.
We're determined to make time and gear up and push forward to North Platt where lunch is a struggle to resolve Simon's need to be given more independence than is currently allowed. We dialog and don't quite get things fixed. Simon sleeps most of the afternoon and we talk a little further at supper. Dialog is so important and it is particularly hard for Simon right now. We are making headway and spend some time debating the handling of the characters in Final Fantasy Tactics. Dogs play in the morning air
The land is varied with reminders of Wyoming The land changes as we move across Nebraska. We are out of the mountains in Cheyenne but the land is waste land and the occasional tree has not started turning green yet. As we move we note the increase in farms that are grazing cattle and then, as we progress, plowing fields and growing crops as well. The trees grow greener through the day and we watch the number of them increase. We watch farmers working the fields and the irrigation systems working displaying dances of water that would make park fountains envious. That is a business I never thought about but it is a big one. There are endless numbers of the giant sprinkler systems all across this country.
End of the day as we approach Lincoln. The skies grow dark and we see signs of rain and an occasional drop on the windshield. NPR speaks of the death of Eldridge Cleaver and the making of Netscape Navigator public. Microsoft doesn't approve. Even losing the two hours in the morning with the tire and losing another arriving in the central time zone we check into the motel at 6:30. Omaha for breakfast says Teddy. Grain elevator in Eastern Nebraska
