Day 8 - Across the Mississippi

2100 miles(approx)

Waldo the gekki on Wendy's knee Started early today. About 7:00 am we were on the road. Crossed the boarder into Iowa before 8:00 and continued for another hour before breakfast at a gas station, convenience store, souveneir shop, and MacDonald's all in the same building. All of us are weary and showing signs of the stress of the trip. Wendy found a long wanted creature to join her inanimate menagerie. A lizard, gekki, who is officially now Waldo. He spent a little time riding on everyone today and almost got left behind at the Ponderosa.
Wendy also manned the camera and went through a struggle getting her first cow pictures. She believed that the cows had a power to stop from being photographed. Every time she tried to capture them a truck blocked the shot. Or a bump in the road made the camera jump or trees got in the way or some other factor prevented the pictures from being taken. There was beautiful terraced farm country in Iowa and Illinois and little things reminded us that we are moving east. The first red wing blackbirds we've seen in a long time came today. The coffee at Dunkin Donuts was good coffee (on the west coast it is terrible). Cows are hard to photograph
Across the Mississippi is Illinois Speed limit for trucks is down to 55 now and we are not able to cover the mileage the way that we have been doing for the past couple of days. It is both frustrating and a relief because the truck feels like it is crawling and is much easier to handle at the lower speed. I think the mileage gets a little better, too. We were trying for Joliet but have stopped at Ottawa so the kids could have some pool time. They played hard and had other kids to share a ball game. I crashed feeling a little wobbly with the cold that I'm fighting. It is going to be pretty tough trying to get in by Monday Night. We looked at miles and it is a hard haul to make it all in two days.
